I had the chance to hit the TOUR R1 Version 2 head a bit yesterday and snapped a few pics of the head below as well for you guys to see. My initial impressions are kind of a surprise to me. To be completely honest, I really was not sure how much of a performance improvement we would actually see this year with R1 vs.
Prior to having the opportunity to hit one, I had somewhat expected that the R1 would essentially be another R11S with different looks and adjustability. Thankfully, my skepticism seems to have been dead wrong and I should have know better!!! The first thing that will stand out when you compare this driver to the previous adjustable Taylormade heads is the sound and feel.
The R1 is by far the best sounding and feeling adjustable driver head that they have ever made. And I mean ever including r7, r7 425, r7 460, r7 Superquad, r9, r9 460, r9 Supertri, r9 SuperDeep, R11, and R11S. Not that all of the previous R series driver heads felt or sounded bad at impact, but the heads with MWT also has just a little more tingy, hollow feel to them and didn't quite have that solid thwack that many love to feel at impact.
This head sounds and feels awesome at impact. Performance wise, I can't say a great deal about it yet since I only had the chance to hit it on the range and for 9 holes. But, I can say that the Tour R1 V2 is definitely lower spin than the Tour R11S V2 head was. I'm not exactly sure by how much yet until I can test it on Trackman, but I thought that it was noticeable to the eye based on the ball flight and distance.
I have also heard from those who have tested the R1 on the monitor that the ball speeds are slightly improved as well. So, I am excited to see the potential gains from the lower spin and any added ball speed once I can get one dialed in see what it can really do. Overall though, I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw and look forward to some more formal testing with it.
One cool thing about the tour issue V2 heads is that they are availabe in 3 lofts and not just a base 10. head that you adjust up or down like the retail ones. So, you have the option of playing the loft that you want without having to change the face angle drastically with the hosel. These tour heads I believe are also 440cc like the R11S V2 head was based on my measurements, but I'll have to confirm on that.
Marcus, thanks for the info on the New Tour R1 v2. Can't wait to hear more about it after you have time to get some actual numbers. Sounds like TM may have a winner even if the graphics are a little strange. I personally still like my TM Tour Superfast V1, I played so well with this driver that's it's hard to even try switching to a newer just to switch. It took me a long time to get the old R510 DF Proto out of the bag. I haven't even tried the Previous released Tour RBZ driver heads.
Like to hear more about the New Tour RBZ stage 2 heads when you get a chance, as I'm still old school glued hosel guy. Is that the old tip? I thought the new one had a ton of markings on it??? Is that just retail? The retail tips have the loft markings on them, but the ones for tour do not since they have different lofts for the head itself. Thanks for the great review, Marcus. I'm really interested to see the results of your testing on TrackMan.
Were the graphics helpful at all, or did you forget about them after a couple of swings? I think even I could remember that serial number I didn't really pay attention much to the graphics, but I was very accurate with it having said that. So, perhaps my alignment was better without realizing it.
I hit it on a few really tough driving holes and didn't miss my line by much with any of them. It definitely wasn't a distraction though and is something that you would get used to pretty quickly I feel.
As for the serial number, I did remove part of it and they are longer than that. But, you knew this.I just wanted to clarify that. Great review Marcus.good to hear that the sound has improved in this model. Was the driver you hit hotmelted? Also i have read on some reviews on the R1 that ball speeds were less than desirable compared to other OEM offerings. However i will wait for your your final review once your able to get numbers. I tend to believe your readings are more accurate Marcus and like Tim would like to hear more on the RBZ2 heads.
Joe Joe, this head was hotmelted slightly. That said, you can only make up for the sound so much with hotmelt. Heads have an inherent sound and acoustic to them which you can alter to a degree sometimes more than others. But, you can always tell a head that naturally has a more solid sound and feel to it. The R1 is very solid!!! 2 totally different sticks, it's a shame sometimes that TM sells a look a like driver that mimics the REAL #1 driver in golf which is the Version 2, talk about bendin over the consumer, it's my only ill will towards them.
Yes, but keep in mind that the truly average golfer who buys clubs is the one who they design the stuff off the rack for and the retail version works perfectly fine for those guys. You really do need 2 different drivers to fit all of the golfers out there, but they already have so many sku's. Would a 15 handicaper get any benefit from a tour head and shaft set-up or is it not worth the time/expense? It really depends on the player. Some guys have reasonably consistent swings, but are 15 handicaps because of short game. Some players have higher handicaps because they drive the ball poorly in part at least because their equipment is ill suited to them and it can make a big difference.
In either case, the proper fit with the right head and shaft component can definitely make a difference. At the same time, some players in that handicap range are just too inconsistent to see enough of a difference. So, it really depends on the player and it's hard to say one way or another across the board. Good or bad, if your swing is somewhat consisent then you should be fit.
Of course, using better performing heads and shafts will never hurt either. However, you may not see the differences that a scratch golfer will. On the other hand, I have seen players with higher handicaps benefit more from getting the right equipment than better players. If you typically fight higher spin rates though, a tour head and higher end shaft will typically help with that.
Whether or not it's worth it though really just depends on the individual. I played the Stage 2 15. fairway today. I have been having problem with my launch and I went from 70 grams fairway shaft to 60 grams, I cut my driver shaft to 3 wood length. An old X-Con6 driver shaft of mine, cut to 43 inch.
Instant height and launch. I am no big hitter by any means. My driver swing speed is only around 93-95, goes around 250-260 yards. My fairway usually go about 225-245 yards. Today, there are a few long par 4 and short par 5 that leaves me about 244-250 yards. Aim a little right or left to avoid hazards, hit some solid ones and 4 out of 6: pin-high.
Good ball flight, can tell it has a good spin too. Can't wait to shaft my own Callaway X Hot fairways.

You will not regret. The performance is pretty good too and the CGB Max delivers a strong if slightly high flight, limted good if you have a medium to low club head speed. I’ve never hit so many straight balls in my life. I recently purchased the 8. A bit of math, meters would be near yards. It reminded me of the Limted TP.

At this price point, it matches, or comes close to the recent price points of a variety of drivers. With the three included shafts, and ability to swap them out without the help of a club makerit definitely is a pretty interesting package. Tony, Very good points. I don’t think TM moves enough weight through their screws to noticeably alter it though. Posted Tsylormade 9, It incorporates Matrix X-Axis Control to lower torque and increase stability. Anyways, I highly recommend this package. So far i’ve went with the x-con 5 for course play but the diamana is a great shaft for low fades on the range but I prefer the height im getting out of the matrix.

Whilst the design of the sole looks very futuristic, we are not sold on the triangular head shape, which is similar to the Titleist D1, although it has to be said that this is by far the better club.
