2013-12-14 Family Tree Maker 2014 for Mac Family Tree Maker for Mac Ancestry.com has announced the third major release of New Family Tree Maker for Mac. They call this Family Tree Maker for Mac 3, as if it is the third major release of Family Tree Maker for Mac ever, and thus continue to deny the Family Tree Maker for Mac history. The first New Family Tree Maker for Mac (FTMM 1) was released late in 2010, shortly after the release of New Family Tree Maker 2011 (FTM 2011) for Windows, but FTMM 1 does not match FTM 2011 in features. Simply put, FTMM 1 isn't FTM 2011 for Mac, it is FTM 2010 for Mac, and FTM 2010 is product released late in 2009. Ancestry.com was telling Windows users that FTM 2011 is so much better than FTM 2010 that they should pay for an upgrade, yet at the same time, was peddling FTMM 1, which does not even match FTM 2010 completely, to Mac users, and asking considerably more for the FTMM 1 license than the FTM 2014 license.

Ancestry.com was essentially treating Mac users as second-rate citizens that should be grateful they made a Mac application at all; presenting them with something inferior, presenting it late, yet demanding a superior price. It probably is the fact that FTMM 1 closely matches FTM 2010 and not FTM 2011 that made Ancestry decide to call it Family Tree Maker for Mac 1 instead of simply FTM 1010 for Mac, as that would make the fact that the product was dated upon release rather evident. In 2011, Ancestry.com released FTM 2012 for Windows, and Family Tree Maker for Mac 2 (FTMM 2). The main new feature was TreeSync. This new feature is so important to Ancestry.com, that Ancestry, infamous for not offering trial editions, released FTM 2012 as an Open Beta.
