Your card isn't obsolete. What happens when you tried to install 10.6.3 (the latest box set version) or 10.6.0? Or are you worried you are left out of the OpenCL 1.x? Yes, that is new, wasn't available in 2006, but then, look at all the trouble people are having with 10.6.4 + graphics and OpenGL. FX 4800 has a 64-bit EFI ROM So you were 'saved' from spending $1800 which might be better spent elsewhere. (there are some good values in Specials). How many apps you use require or make (good) use of OpenCL?
The most common graphic upgrade today for 1,1 owners is, ATI 4870. And there also, you won't find that 'officially' supported (the product page even says it requires things that don't matter and aren't a factor).
Too bad also that Nvidia unlike ATI doesn't just come out with EFI 32-bit and 64-bit ROM; and, get better drivers for GTX 285 (be nice to see GTX 400s, too). Mac Pro pre-2009 forum. It isn't four years old, and yours more like three (though 1.1 came out in August '06). I've heard people moan over lack of native 64-bit kernel mode, but not that their $1800 graphic card was. And I see a lot of threads on Mac Pro forum and over on MacRumors. This is a first.
Did you READ the comments, or look over on Mac Pro forum? Take that 'works with 2008' with grain of salt, like everything else. It works, there are 100s of threads and more - because there is nothing that different in 2008. You really think 800MHz FBDIMM matters?

There are so many issues though with graphics drivers and with Snow Leopard. In print: give me a URL. Windows 7 64-bit works great, too, and that officially isn't 'supported' either on Mac Pro 1,1. Try the $29 SL DVD for yourself and be your own judge. I've been using a GTX-285 in an 09 mac pro w/single Samsung 24in LCD display and never noticed this problem. I had used an ATI 4870 before doing the GTX-285 review in early June 2009 and honestly didn't notice it at that time either. (I've not reinstalled the 4870 since June 2009 however.) And check the Nvidia forums. Every computer is very near to being 'outmoded' when shipped. No matter what you buy, within a year or two there will be a newer, faster, more capable version. But that doesn't make the current one obsolete. You have a first generation Mac Pro.
It was offered with a variety of built to order GPU options, among them the Quadro 4500, notable mostly for its stereo 3D port. That may or may not have been the best choice for you but you can still upgrade it to a much faster one, or not. Either way, you can still run Snow Leopard, the most recent OS Apple offers. It isn't obsolete. FWIW, this same 'Lionel' also wrote in: 'All owners of the last version of the iMac G5 will remember the defect affecting capacitors on those models.' The problem with that is it wasn't the last model of G5's, it was the first of three, & only a certain range of serial numbers were affected.
He also claims that Apple along with Dell were 'reinstalling the same defective component' when repairing the computer. The whole 'bad capacitor' thing was covered all over the web & even the tiniest bit of fact checking would have revealed this is a gross distortion of the facts.
It would seem that 'HardMac' does not stand for hard facts, but it is happy to post whatever sensational claptrap will attract eyeballs & advertising revenue. П˜Ÿ As a local wit recently reminded me, 'Just because the web is filled with bull doesn't mean we have to be gula-bull.'
(OK, it was funny at the time but you had to be there to fully appreciate it.). Apple's response to my situation was that I can install Leopard, but not Snow Leopard. I'd like to note that I have been waiting for a more stable OS (Snow Leopard and operable Open GL beyond v.1x) for my specific uses (animation). And I was comparing Macs to 64 bit PC machines at the time of my purchase.
I was told I had an upgradable machine. I might make another attempt to call Apple, but it will be a lengthy process. The phone support team simple reads what is on the website. I'll have to spend a considerable amount of time on hold, waiting to get second hand information from someone I'm not allowed to talk to in person. I am not exaggerating, or making anything up. I also have OS X 10.4.11 running very well. I just can't upgrade any of my applications at this point.
I'm trying to avoid creating 'additional' problems with installations that bring faults into the system. If I can help it, I need to keep my time focused on production and not wild goose chases. If only I owned an iShopping device with iStore purchasing problems. Steve would be there for me. I believe you got some bad advice.

I suggest calling Apple again. If you are not satisfied with the answers you are getting, say so. If necessary, keep doing that until you are offered the choice of speaking with a Product Specialist or 'tier 2' representative.
Apple consistently gets #1 or #2 ratings for customer support but sometimes you get someone incapable of doing more than following a scripted format. However, part of the script is to not end the call without asking if you are satisfied your issue has been resolved or if there is anything else they can do for you. Take advantage of that.
